Junk Removal in Wheat Ridge

Wheat Ridge calls itself a limited-service city — trash isn't a city service. There's an annual Large Item Pick-up, but it's one item per address and it fills at 190 households. For everyone else, and everything else, it's a private job.

We do — not the curb

Wheat Ridge is direct about what it is: a limited-service city. Water, fire, sanitation, trash, and utilities are not provided by the city. Residents arrange their own hauler.

The city does run one thing — an annual Large Item Pick-up, contracted to Republic Services. It's a genuinely good program for what it is, and the terms are worth reading before you count on it.

The terms

The first 190 residences to register are eligible. One item per address. Single-family homes only — apartments, townhomes, condos, and businesses can't use it. The city explicitly won't pay to collect additional items; anything beyond the one is a separate paid arrangement with the hauler. Registration is annual and closes once it's full.

There's also a liftability rule that's more useful than it sounds: a large item won't be collected if two workers can't safely lift it into the truck. And hazardous material, construction debris, and appliances with Freon are out.

Why that leaves a gap

One item is a couch. It is not a basement, a garage, or the contents of a house.

Wheat Ridge has a lot of mid-century ranches on generous lots, a lot of long-tenure homeowners, and a lot of detached garages and back sheds that have been accumulating since the Nixon administration. The typical call we get here isn't one item. It's a garage plus a shed plus whatever's behind the shed.

And the 190-slot cap means that even for a single item, the program is a race. If you missed it, or you're in a townhome, or your item is the kind two people can't lift, the program doesn't apply to you at all.

What we do in Wheat Ridge

Garage, shed, and basement cleanouts — the bread and butter here. Estate cleanouts, because this is a city where houses change hands after a long time. Single heavy items, including the ones the city program specifically can't lift: safes, pianos, hot tubs, chest freezers, home gyms. Rental turns along 38th and Wadsworth. Remodel debris from the steady stream of ranch updates happening across the city.

We carry it out ourselves, we load it, and the disposal is in the number we quote you — which matters more here than in most places, because with no city trash service there's nothing absorbing that cost but you.

One caution worth flagging on the older properties: a lot of Wheat Ridge housing predates the late 1970s, and flooring, mastic, popcorn ceiling, and pipe insulation from that era can contain asbestos. Abatement is licensed work in Colorado. We won't knowingly haul suspect material, and on an old house we'll tell you when a test before demo is the honest call.

What the city does — and doesn't

One item, 190 households, once a year.

Wheat Ridge states that it is a limited-service city — water, fire, sanitation, trash, and utilities are not provided by the city. It does run an annual Large Item Pick-up contracted to Republic Services, but the terms are tight: the first 190 registered residences are eligible, one item per address, single-family homes only, and the city will not pay to collect additional items. Registration is annual and closes when it fills.

  • Trash is not a city service — residents arrange their own hauler.
  • Annual Large Item Pick-up is capped at the first 190 residences to register.
  • One item per address. Additional items are a separate paid arrangement with the hauler.
  • Apartments, townhomes, condos, and businesses are not eligible.
  • Excluded: hazardous material, construction debris, appliances with Freon, and anything two workers can't safely lift.
  • Item has to be at the curb by 7 a.m. on your registered date.

Programs change. Everything above was verified against Wheat Ridge Large Item Pick-up, but confirm the current schedule, limits, and cost with the City of Wheat Ridge— and with your HOA or your hauler if you have one — before you count on it. We'd rather you use a free city program that fits than pay us for something you didn't need.

Wheat Ridge junk removal questions

How does Wheat Ridge's Large Item Pick-up work?
It's an annual program contracted to Republic Services. The first 190 residences to register are eligible, one item per address, single-family homes only, at the curb by 7 a.m. on your registered date. Registration closes when it fills, so check the city's page early in the year.
Can I use it for more than one item?
No. One item per address, and the city states it will not pay to collect additional items. Anything beyond that is a separate paid arrangement — with the hauler, or with us.
I live in a townhome. Can I use the city program?
No. Apartments, townhomes, condos, and businesses aren't eligible. That's a large share of the newer housing in Wheat Ridge, and it's a common reason people call us.
My item is too heavy for two people to lift. Now what?
The city program won't take it — that's an explicit rule. Safes, pianos, hot tubs, chest freezers, and home gyms are exactly what we're set up for, with straps, hand trucks, and a crew that takes things apart when that's the right move.
Does Wheat Ridge provide trash service?
No. Wheat Ridge is a limited-service city — water, fire, sanitation, trash, and utilities aren't provided by the city. Residents set up their own hauler, and terms for large items vary by company.
