Junk Removal in Boulder

Boulder's Universal Zero Waste Ordinance makes waste service mandatory, three-stream, and everybody's problem. What it doesn't do is haul anything — the city provides no collection, and no bulk pickup.

Who carries it out
We do — not the curb

Boulder is the most regulated waste market on the Front Range and, at the same time, one where the city hauls nothing.

The Universal Zero Waste Ordinance requires every property in Boulder to have waste service that provides separated compost, recycling, and trash. Property owners must subscribe. But the city is explicit that it doesn't provide municipal hauling and doesn't control rates or service levels — that's the private haulers' territory.

There's no city bulk pickup. If you have a sectional or a chest freezer, the question is what your specific hauler will do, and the answer comes from them.

Why the three-stream rule matters for a haul-off

Boulder residents are already sorting. That habit is useful, because a sorted pile is genuinely cheaper to dispose of than a mixed one, and that shows up in what a job costs.

Clean concrete and brick go to a recycler and become road base. Clean metal has a scrap market. Working furniture and appliances can go to a donation center. Mixed debris — where the drywall, the wood, the plastic, and the trash are all in one heap — has one destination and one price.

We sort what we load. If you've already got it separated, say so when you ask for a quote, because it affects the number.

Colorado's disposal rules, which Boulder residents tend to already know

Electronics have been banned from Colorado landfills since 2013 under SB12-133, so TVs, monitors, and computers go to an e-waste recycler. Leftover architectural paint has a statewide take-back program under SB14-029 (PaintCare), funded at the point of sale, with drop-off sites at paint and hardware retailers — we'd rather you use it than pay us to move paint. Appliances with refrigerant need a certified technician to recover it under Clean Air Act §608 before disposal.

None of that is Boulder-specific, but it's the part people here ask about most.

What we run in Boulder

Junk removal and cleanouts — basements, garages, estates, and a steady stream of rental turns given how much of this city rents. Furniture and appliance removal out of older housing near the Hill and Whittier where the stairs are the actual job. Remodel debris from the constant updating of pre-war and mid-century stock.

Two Boulder-specific cautions. First, the older the house, the more likely flooring, mastic, popcorn ceiling, and pipe insulation contain asbestos — abatement is licensed work in Colorado and we won't knowingly haul suspect material, so on an old house a test before demo is the honest call. Second, access on the older west-side streets is tight, and where the trailer can sit relative to the pile changes the job more than the volume does.

Get a quote and tell us the address, the stairs, and whether it's sorted.

What the city does — and doesn't

Service is required in Boulder. Collection isn't the city's job.

The City of Boulder states that it does not provide municipal waste hauling and does not set rates or dictate service levels. At the same time, the Universal Zero Waste Ordinance requires every property in Boulder to have waste service providing separated compost, recycling, and trash — property owners must subscribe. There's no city bulk or large-item pickup program; what happens to a bulky item is between you and your licensed hauler, and worth confirming with them directly.

  • The city does not provide municipal waste hauling and doesn't control rates.
  • The Universal Zero Waste Ordinance requires every property to subscribe to trash, recycling, and compost.
  • Separation into three streams isn't optional here — it's ordinance.
  • No city bulk or large-item pickup program.
  • Bulky-item terms come from your licensed hauler — confirm with them, not the city.

Programs change. Everything above was verified against Boulder Universal Zero Waste Ordinance, but confirm the current schedule, limits, and cost with the City of Boulder— and with your HOA or your hauler if you have one — before you count on it. We'd rather you use a free city program that fits than pay us for something you didn't need.

Boulder junk removal questions

Does Boulder pick up bulky items?
The city doesn't provide waste hauling at all — it doesn't collect, and there's no city bulk pickup program. What happens to a bulky item is set by whichever licensed hauler you subscribe to, so confirm the terms with them directly.
What is the Universal Zero Waste Ordinance?
Boulder's ordinance requiring every property in the city to have waste service that provides separated compost, recycling, and trash. Property owners have to subscribe. It makes service mandatory and three-stream — it doesn't make the city the hauler.
Does sorting the pile lower my price?
It can. Clean concrete and brick get recycled, clean metal has a scrap market, and working furniture can be donated — all of which cost less to handle than a mixed heap. Tell us if it's already separated when you ask for a quote.
What do I do with leftover paint?
Use PaintCare. Colorado's paint stewardship program under SB14-029 is funded at the point of sale and takes leftover architectural paint back at participating retailers. It's already paid for — don't pay us to move it.
My house is from the 1920s. Can you haul the old flooring?
Only if it's not suspect. Flooring, mastic, popcorn ceiling, and pipe insulation in old houses can contain asbestos, and abatement is licensed work in Colorado — we won't knowingly haul it. On a house that old, test before demo. We'll tell you when we think that's the call.
