Junk Removal in Golden

Golden contracts its trash service and includes one free large item pickup a year. It's a good perk, and it's one item — with a published do-not-take list that covers most of what a Golden remodel or landscape job actually produces.

Who carries it out
We do — not the curb

Golden runs one of the better setups on the Front Range: a contracted Pay-As-You-Throw program with 5280 Waste Solutions, and one free large item pickup per household per year, on call.

Use it. If you have one couch and you haven't used your pickup this year, that's a free solution and we'd rather you take it.

Then look at what's excluded, because the list is long and specific: cement, dirt, rocks, bricks, cast iron, steel, tires, stumps, chemicals, paint, batteries, medical waste, windshield glass, appliances with Freon, TVs, and all electronics.

Why that list matters in Golden specifically

Look at what Golden houses actually generate. This is a town on a hillside with a lot of stone, a lot of terraced yards, a lot of aging concrete flatwork, and a lot of mature trees. Cement, dirt, rock, brick, and stumps aren't edge cases here — they're the default output of a Golden landscape or hardscape project.

Every one of them is on the do-not-take list.

That's the heavy debris side of our business, and it's a real specialty rather than an afterthought. Dense material is priced by weight rather than by the size of the pile, because a trailer hits its legal weight long before it looks full. We tell you that up front, we cap the load so it leaves legal, and clean concrete and brick get routed to a recycler where they become road base instead of landfill.

The other gap: one item, once

A once-a-year allowance is great for the couch. It doesn't cover a garage, a basement, a rental turn, or an estate.

Golden has a lot of long-held houses, a lot of student and faculty turnover around the School of Mines, and a steady flow of updates to older homes near downtown. Those generate volume, not single items.

What we run in Golden

Junk removal and cleanouts — garages, basements, sheds, estates, rental turns. Furniture and appliance removal, including the excluded Freon appliances and electronics, routed correctly. Remodel and construction debris. And heavy material — broken flatwork, retaining wall block, landscape rock, flagstone, dirt from a regrade.

Access is the thing we look at hardest in Golden. Narrow canyon-side streets, steep drives, terraced back yards, and long carries up or down a grade change a job more than the volume does. It's honest to price that in rather than discover it on the day, so if the route from the pile to where a truck can sit is ugly, tell us when you ask for a quote.

If a hardscape or patio tear-out is what's making the pile, the sibling company Frontier Patio does the building and Frontier Demolition does the breaking — same ownership, so the demo and the haul-off come as one scope and one invoice.

What the city does — and doesn't

One free large item a year — with a long exclusion list.

The City of Golden contracts residential trash, recycling, and compost to 5280 Waste Solutions under a Pay-As-You-Throw program, and large item pickup is included for every participating household once per calendar year, scheduled by phone. Additional items can be scheduled year-round for a fee. The published exclusion list is unusually specific and unusually long — most of it is exactly what a renovation or a landscape job generates.

  • One large item pickup per participating household, per calendar year, scheduled on call.
  • Additional items year-round for a fee — call the hauler for the current rate.
  • Published exclusions include cement, dirt, rocks, bricks, cast iron, and steel.
  • Also excluded: tires, stumps, chemicals, paint, batteries, medical waste, windshield glass.
  • Electronics, TVs, and appliances with Freon are out — Golden runs a separate free appliance recycling program.

Programs change. Everything above was verified against Golden Trash & Recycling FAQs, but confirm the current schedule, limits, and cost with the City of Golden and 5280 Waste Solutions— and with your HOA or your hauler if you have one — before you count on it. We'd rather you use a free city program that fits than pay us for something you didn't need.

Golden junk removal questions

Does Golden include a free bulk pickup?
Yes — the Pay-As-You-Throw program includes large item pickup once per calendar year for every participating household, scheduled by calling the hauler. Additional items can be scheduled year-round for a fee.
Will Golden's program take concrete, dirt, or rock?
No. Cement, dirt, rocks, bricks, cast iron, and steel are all on the published exclusion list, along with tires, stumps, chemicals, paint, batteries, and electronics. That's most of what a Golden landscape or hardscape job produces.
How do you price broken concrete and rock?
By weight, not by the size of the pile. Dense material hits a trailer's legal weight while it still looks half empty. We ask what the material is, roughly how thick and how many square feet, and whether there's rebar in it — that gets us a number that holds.
Can you take my old TV or refrigerator?
Yes. Both are excluded from Golden's large item pickup. Electronics go to an e-waste recycler because Colorado banned them from landfills under SB12-133, and refrigerant appliances go to a facility where a certified technician recovers the refrigerant under Clean Air Act §608.
My driveway is steep and the pile is in the back yard. Is that a problem?
It's a Golden problem and we plan for it. Long carries, grade changes, and narrow streets change a job more than the volume does. Tell us the route from the pile to where a truck can sit and we'll price it honestly instead of finding out on the day.
